From a Hurricane Downpour to Bella Collina: Kelsey & John's Full Love Story

Some love stories start with fireworks. Kelsey and John's started with a hurricane.

I love getting to sit down with couples and hear how their story actually began — not the polished version, the real one. This one has all my favorite ingredients: a chance connection, a "coincidence" that feels like fate, a proposal months in the making, and — my personal favorite part of the whole thing — an engagement session in one of Raleigh's prettiest gardens before it all came together at one of North Carolina's most romantic wedding venues. Here's their story, alongside some of my favorite images from along the way.

How It Started: A Mutual Friend and a Hurricane Downpour

Kelsey and John connected the way so many couples do now — through a mutual friend on Instagram. A few messages back and forth turned into a first date, and that first date happened to fall in the middle of a hurricane downpour. If that's not a sign that two people are willing to show up for each other through anything, I don't know what is.

The Lake Gaston Coincidence

A year later, John invited Kelsey to spend the Fourth of July with him at Lake Gaston — and it turned out Kelsey's family had a lake house there too. Two families, one lake, and neither of them had any idea. Some couples call it coincidence. I call it fate.

From there, life did what life does. They graduated together from Virginia Tech, packed up for Nashville so Kelsey could attend PA school, and along the way added a very opinionated kitten named Rose to the family (self-appointed queen of the house, from what I hear). They took on the roles of proud aunt and uncle to Arabella and Charles. And eventually, they landed in Raleigh to start building their life together.

The Proposal: Grove Park Inn, Asheville, NC

If you've ever visited the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, you already understand why John chose it — it's a place that's meant something to him since he was a kid visiting with his family.

John played it smart, too. He told Kelsey the proposal wasn't happening that particular weekend, just to keep her hopes low, when in reality he'd been planning the whole thing since December. After a beautiful dinner on the Sunset Terrace, he asked Kelsey to walk over and check out the Vanderbilt Terrace with him. When she turned around, he was already down on one knee. A photographer appeared out of nowhere to capture it — John had arranged the entire thing without her knowing.

She said yes. They called their family and friends, then spent the rest of the weekend soaking in the magic of the Grove Park Inn.

The Engagement Session: WRAL Azalea Gardens, Raleigh

Once Kelsey and John settled into life in Raleigh, it only made sense to capture their engagement session close to home — and the WRAL Azalea Gardens is one of my favorite spots in the city for exactly that reason. Tucked behind the WRAL studios between NC State's main and Centennial campuses, this five-acre garden is packed with fountains, winding pathways, and more than sixty varieties of azaleas, so there's a soft, romantic backdrop practically everywhere you turn.

We planned Kelsey and John's session around the garden's bloom season, and the color did all the work for us. Between the flowering pathways and the golden late-afternoon light, it felt less like a "photo shoot" and more like an excuse for the two of them to wander around holding hands for an hour — which, honestly, is exactly what a good engagement session should feel like.

The Wedding Day: Bella Collina Mansion, Stokesdale, NC

For the wedding itself, Kelsey and John chose Bella Collina Mansion in Stokesdale — a Tuscan-inspired, lakefront estate on Belews Lake near Greensboro and Winston-Salem. If you haven't been, it's easy to see why couples fall for it the second they pull up the drive. Between the stone architecture, the manicured grounds, and the water views, it feels like a quiet corner of the Italian countryside dropped into the North Carolina hills — the kind of venue that barely needs extra decor because it's already doing so much of the work.

Every wedding I photograph is its own story, but the ones that stay with me are the ones where you can feel the years behind the "I do." Kelsey and John's day was exactly that kind of full-circle moment — years of small choices, chance meetings, and quiet commitment finally getting their celebration, all set against one of the most romantic backdrops in the state.
